Good News from Lymphoma Guru
This morning (Thursday) we had our meeting with Dr. Zelenetz, to assess the results of the first chemotherapy protocol and to go over the pending protocol. The news was very good. I had an inkling that things were going well on Wednesday, when I picked up my CT films and the PET scan report at…

Short health Update
Fresh from my triumph of figuring out how to post a picture (see the next post and note that if you hit the link that says "continue reading…" it will take you to … nothing! Don’t know how I did that.) here’s a brief discussion of current state of my body. Thirteen days after last…

NYT on healthcare costs and providers
The NY Times had two interesting articles today on healthcare costs and healthcare delivery. You can access the articles for free for one week on the Times website. You may have to register, but it’s free and easy. The first article’s headline Congress Weighs Big Cuts to Medicaid and Medicare – New York Times sounds…

A bit more fatigue
A little to my surprise, I did feel a bit more then just the mild fatigue I had felt in the middle of my prior chemo sessions. It was enough for me to leave my office early and take a late afternoon rest. I also decided not to go to the gym. Still, while it…

Therapy plan going forward
The plan is coming together. I had my CT scan Monday and PET scan Tuesday. Next Thursday, November 3rd, I will see the lymphoma guru Dr. Zelenetz at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC and he’ll review the scans, bloodwork, etc and (hopefully) tell me everything is going to plan. The next day I will have…

Follow-up to fourth chemotherapy
Today is the fourth day after my fourth (and last) RCHOP chemo and I feel good. Now I have two scans scheduled to re-stage the lymphoma. Tomorrow I have a CT scan at Phelps. Of all the procedures I’ve had this is the one I dislike the most. I’ve had about five of them. The…

On being your own advocate
When I was diagnosed with lymphoma in August 2003, I got plenty of good advice from a number of people who’d dealt with cancer as well as from physician friends. And the gist of the advice always came down to “you must be your own advocate.” In other words, don’t just hand over the care…

My fourth chemo session
Yesterday’s outpatient chemotherapy went well. First I saw Dr. Phil Caron, who reviewed the bloodwork and my file and wrote a new prescription for an antibiotic (Bactrim) for my sinus infection. Dr. Carol Wasserheit, who’s been doing most of the follow-up in the past 2 years, dropped in to say hi and tell me how…

4th chemo session tomorrow
My last outpatient RCHOP chemotherapy is tomorrow. As with the first two sessions, I feel pretty good now, at the end of the cycle of my third session. Only fly in the ointment is that I’ve developed a sinus infection. The sinusitis that I seem to never completely shake off, blossomed in the last four…

Dinner with a mantle cell survivor
On Friday evening I had a brief supper and discussion with a Maryknoll priest who in 2000 was diagnosed and treated for the same type of lymphoma that I have. Since I didn’t ask his permission to post this, I am just going to call him Fr. M. It’s a funny coincidence that my good…
