An icon. Paved the way for conservative media. Announced lung cancer last February and that he was terminally ill this past December.

Rush Limbaugh, conservative radio host, dead at 70

Limbaugh’s death at age 70 was announced Wednesday on his influential conservative radio program, by his wife, Kathryn.

Limbaugh announced last February that he was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer.

“I know that I am most certainly not the Limbaugh that you tuned in to listen to today. I, like you, very much wish Rush was behind this golden microphone right now, welcoming you to another exceptional three hours of broadcasting,” his wife told listeners in a surprise noon announcement on his radio show.

“For over 32 years, Rush has cherished you, loyal audience, and always looked forward to every single show. It is with profound sadness I must share with you directly that our beloved Rush, my wonderful husband, passed away this morning due to complications from lung cancer.”

Kathryn Limbaugh said that “as so many of you know, losing a loved one is terribly difficult, even more so when that loved one is larger than life.”

    I’m sorry for his family. Such a tragic waste of a brilliant mind and a spreader of innumerable fabrications that helped elect people who inflicted untold suffering on marginalized people without much power.

    Um, okay Tom. What was your purpose in posting a story about the recent death of Limbaugh while not posting about the deaths of so many others?

    I wont speak ill of the dead but I will just post some of his more controversial quotes. The reader can decide if Mr Limbaugh is looking up or down on us right now
    “When a gay person turns his back on you, it is anything but an insult; it’s an invitation.”
    Limbaugh once told a Black caller: “Take that bone out of your nose and call me back,” according to Fair.
    He began airing “Barack, the Magic Negro,” a racist parody song about then-Sen. Barack Obama’s popularity with many white voters, in 2007
    On The Rush Limbaugh Show in 2004, he said, “I think it’s time to get rid of this whole National Basketball Association. Call it the TBA, the Thug Basketball Association, and stop calling them teams. Call ’em gangs
    .”In his “Undeniable Truths,” written as part of an article for the Sacramento Union in 1988, Limbaugh wrote, “Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women access to the mainstream of society.”
    “Women should not be allowed on juries where the accused is a stud.”

    As a matter of fact Greg I do post about the deaths of other people. See my January 23 posting on Larry King. Limbaugh was/is a hugely important cultural figure, whether you agree with him or not. He remade a whole industry – talk radio and conservative media in general – and had a profound influence – whether you’re happy about it or not – on politics.
    Steven he was a national broadcaster for over 30 years – he made some inelegant statements at times when trying to be humorous. Of course the source you quote -FAIR – is a leftist media watchdog, which is fine. I personally found Limbaugh entertaining and agreed with his positions maybe 70% of the time. If you want nightly samples of inelegant statements and angry broadcasters, try MSNBC. Or for that matter, some of the CNN “journalists”.

    Greg, it’s Tom’s blog. He has posted about many people’s lives and deaths. It’s his blog and he can post whatever he wants. It’s not up for debate. He could post all day long about the Queen of England. Who cares! I enjoy his blog posting and I like conservative commentators publicly sharing their ideas. Liberals used to have a saying: I may not agree with you, but I’ll fight for your right to say it.”
    What ever happened to real liberals?
    Tom keep posting what ever you’re heart desires! It’s your constitutional right and I enjoy your blog!

    Jessica, I agree with you. It’s Tom’s blog and he can post whatever he wants and yes, it’s his constitutional right. I was asking him why he was choosing to post about Rush Limbaugh in particular. Was he a fan? Concerned about Limbaugh’s numerous racist and misogynistic rants? Both? And, of course, it’s his right to not respond to me if he prefers!

    Tom, what I’m really asking you – and again, Jessica, I know it’s Tom’s right not to answer – is whether YOU are happy about Rush’s work and legacy, not whether your blog readers are.

    Well i thought I answered it when I said “I personally found Limbaugh entertaining and agreed with his positions maybe 70% of the time.” And I also said “he made some inelegant statements at times when trying to be humorous.” And no I don’t think he was racist or misogynist – and neither did James Golden a.k.a. Bo Snerdley his associate producer who worked for him since 1992 and is black. Nor did the many African American intellectuals who he interviewed think he was a racist. But I understand that progressive democrats hated his guts and some of the real whackos cheered his death – because he was so articulate on so many issues. He was very good on some social and economic issues which I agreed with him on. He was on three hours a day monday thru friday and i would guess I probably heard him maybe 2-3 hours a week – mostly when in the car. How often did you listen to him?
