How did I do on my 2018 resolution to read a book a month?

I spend so much time reading stuff for work as well as newspaper and magazine articles (most of it opinionated drivel unfortunately)  as well as stuff people email me (I always open anything sent to me by anyone I know) that in the last several years I'd gotten into the sad habit of not reading books! I used to read a book a week – or close to that anyway. But that was years ago. So I determined to get back into the habit of at least some serious reading. I reckoned one a month would be a good goal for 2018.

So, while I did read some excellent books, I didn't hit my goal. Here's what I did read with links to the reviews of those I posted.

Recent Read: "The Coddling of the American Mind"

Past read: "Chasing Hillary"

12 Rules for Life, an Antidote to Chaos

Latest Read: "Bad Blood" about the great Theranos/Elizabeth Holmes fraud

Read earlier this year – Pope Francis: "Rejoice and Be Glad"

I also read this very good, short book but one which I didn't review: ThomasAquinas in 50 Pages which was a good review or introduction to Aquinas and took about an hour or so to read. I really should have reviewed it. It's written by a former Episcopalian priest who converted to RC.

So six good books, all highly recommended by myself.

Then there's this book which I started to read but stopped about 30% through it, since I already knew what he was writing. The True Story of Fake News: How Mainstream Media Manipulates Millions. The author is Mark Dice a conservative blogger and pot-stirrer with a large following.

Lastly no sense reviewing this book which I recently got; it's a quick read. Reasons to Vote for Democrats: A Comprehensive Guide As the reviewer on the front cover writes, "Thorough".

Anyway, I am determined to do more than a dozen books in 2019, and will review all of them.

  1. Hi Tom, this is a great resolution and while you didn’t hit your goal you did really good with that book list. I managed to read a few books last year but I have fallen in the same bad habit of reading news or story articles more frequently. I feel this is because my time is so limited at times and I find myself eager to read something short to completion. Some books are an easy read and I manage to get through them in a couple days. Others take a lot of thought and reflection and you simply have to go through slowly. I will definitely check out a few from your list. Happy New Year!

  2. For anyone to be able to really consider himself up to speed on what’s happening in the world right now, there’s one book which is an absolute must read. It costs only NINE BUCKS, downloads in seconds, and can be read in one measly evening. Why in the world would anyone interested in keeping up to date on the most important question in the world today NOT buy and read this book????????
