Breakneck Ridge solo yesterday

Well not exactly solo. The climb was mobbed. I thought that it would be relatively empty since summer is gone but I sure was wrong. When I arrived a few minutes to 12, I had to drive back and forth on 9D to find a place to park. I did the loop – 2 hours 53 minutes total from my car. That first hour sure is tough.

Pictures are mostly to show how crowded it was. Will do another posting when I have time.

looking up from same spot. At times you had to wait in line to move forward.

looking back

looking up – this might be the next to last ridge – or next to next last one

Here’s the top of that one – quite a (young) crowd

This is the last big ridge (I think) and with a log jam – people on the right were coming down – I believe a girl scout group – not sure of their route up. You have to look carefully to see them. By the time I got across the little valley they were still being helped along by their scoutmasters.

A no people south view near the top of the last ridge.

And looking north at Sugarloaf and the Newburgh-Beacon bridge beyond.

I took this very near the sign saying the elevation was 1240 feet. My head is blotting out the bridge but Sugarloaf (my favorite hike in the Hudson Highlands) is still there

Was home just after 3:30 and felt pretty good – in fact went to the gym at 4:30 and did 21 minutes on the elliptical. Was pretty hungry last night though …

  1. 21 minutes on the elliptical after all that hiking? What a glutton for punishment!
