News flash – Tim benches 225 pounds

Just did it this evening. Not bad for a boy who just turned 15 and coming off his knee injury.

It’s a landmark, because 225 means two big (45 Lb) discs at each end of the bar (the bar itself weighs 45).

Four days ago Tim was bugging me to go for a PB, when he was just doing sets, with low reps (& high weight). So I let him go as high as he wanted – he reached his old number of 215, and then failed twice at 225. Had he not done as many repetitions before going for the PB (personal best, for the uninitiated) we both felt he’d have gotten it.

So at 5:30 in the gym earlier, I said let’s work toward 225. And he got it, after warming up at 135, 155, and 175, and then doing singles at 185 -195 – 205 and 215.

Because of his knee injury, Tim had a two month layoff from lifting weights, and only started back (upper body only) on November 17th. So – that’s good going.

Meanwhile, fat old Dad managed 7 sets of 5 reps @ 135.

Tom, I suggest you avoid arm wrestling with Tim! Mary

Right! A year ago I could actually leg wrestle with Tim and flip him. Now he’d drill me through the wall … He did start doing some light squatting yesterday, and we expect will get OK for full activity in about three weeks.

    Ouch! Tim, be careful!
135 isn’t too bad either, is it? After all, you must be pushing 40, no? Well, you look the same as you did at 40.

…of course, my last part of the post was directed at the senior Mr. Faranda.

I spot Tim on any heavy bench lifts – right now, that’s anything over 185. No sense taking a chance…
Meanwhile, he spots me on anything 160 or more – and I haven’t tried over 160 in months. My one rep max is probably 175.
Tim will have to use a squat rack when he gets back to doing heavy squats – still off limits for about a month because of the knee.
    I haven’t looked 40 in twenty years.!
