New exercise regimen for people over fifty

This was sent to me by my friend Karen, the wife of my college roommate Mike. Here she is – the young woman without the wine in her hand. The wine drinker is Marissa (formerly) Novotny, at her own wedding this past spring.

Here’s Karen’s breakthrough workout:

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.

With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.

Each day you’ll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags.

Then try 50-lb potato bags and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute.  (I’m at this level.)

After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.

That’s a great exercise! However, by the time Karen gets to fifty, they’ll probably invent some other new-fangled regimen.

  2. Good regimen- but is it ok to do this exercise one hand at a time so that my other hand is free to hold my glass of wine?

  3. Well now thats the kind of question youd expect from Australia, isnt it?
I will have to check with Karen on this, but Id have to say yes. In fact,
one of those very big cans of Fosters might work even better.
