Health update: Yesterday’s lymphoma check-up

I had my six month check-up with the lymphoma guru, Dr. Zelenetz, at Sloan Kettering.

No news; and no news is good news. I am very slightly anemic, which is probably a follow-up to some bronchitis I had two weeks ago. Will have another blood count in a month, just to check it.

But here’s something promising – according to Dr. Zelenetz, they have a new chemo drug for treating, among other things, mantle cell lymphoma. He said one of his patients had an effective response when nothing else worked. I can’t remember the name of the drug – it started with a “B” and was originally being used to treat CLL (chronic lymphatic leukemia) – but it’s good to know there’s an apparently effective alternate if/when my lymphoma returns.

Good Luck with treatment for your MCL. I am a MCL survivor almost two years out from allogienic stem cell transplant. Diagnosed in 2004, treated with R-hyper-CVAD, remission until 2006, treated with RICE prior to SCT. I have been through some rough patches such as grade 4 GVHD that landed me inpatient for almost 3 months. I am doing very well at present.
