I just got an email that this priest had died. I knew him a little, and then Brigid and I had some very pleasant contact with him. Tim and his birth mother stayed in his home (it was below Kingston, NY) before Tim was born. I doubt if we had seen Fr. at all in the last eight or so years.
Here’s the text of the email informing us. It’s from another father whose adopted son was helped by him:
I just learned that Fr. Eugene Keane died on February 25. A witty,
eccentric & dedicated priest, he was already fighting abortion in the
mid-sixties &, among other things ran a home for unwed mothers – where our
Joseph’s stayed until his birth – & to which Governor Cuomo offered the 5
grand honororium from Notre Dame when the Governor made his Pontius Pilate
speech there in 1984 – but Keane turned it down.
So a prayer for this good priest’s soul this weekend, & perhaps a Mass at
some point, I commend to your consideration.
I confess to shedding a couple of tears while posting this …
