I’ve gotten to know pretty much all the Croton streets and all the various walks on Croton Point. Typical has been about 4 and a half miles, with some days shorter (if I’m also lifting dumbbells in the basement) but also as long as 10 miles.

So Saturday I went to my all time favorite short hike, up Sugarloaf. They’ve changed the trail on account of the fires last fall, and it’s now longer, but not as steep at the end. just over a mile and a half to the top. First time I’ve gone up in about three years; it was a good test for my partially replaced knee, done last August. Lots of cars parked along the road but almost all of them were there to go up Breakneck Ridge.

Here’s the iconic Sugarloaf picture which everyone knows; the stump in the foreground and Storm King across the Hudson.

And just to prove I was there –

Here are a few more – Bannerman Island right below

Here is the top of the old trail section currently shut, and you’ll see what the sign says

And here’s a fairly vivid view of some of the fire damage from last fall.

The view north to the Beacon Newburgh Bridge

My favorite local short uphill/mountain hike!
