UPDATE<\/strong><\/span>: The Archdiocese sent around a PS<\/em> –  Findings and Recommendations <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dear Member of the Family of the Archdiocese:

<\/p>\n

Last September, I asked Judge Barbara Jones, a much-respected former Federal Judge and prosecutor, to review, evaluate, and recommend improvements to the Archdiocese of New York\u2019s response to the sexual abuse crisis that has been confronting our Church.<\/p>\n

Now, after an intense year in which Judge Jones and her team have conducted an exhaustive examination of our policies, procedures, and protocols, a complete review of every priest file, and held countless hours of interviews with archdiocesan staff, including me, Judge Jones has provided me with a summary of her findings and recommendations.  These were released during a press conference today, and, true to my promise to you for transparency, accountability, and action<\/em>, I share her summary of findings and recommendations with you.  They are posted at archny.org\/JudgeJones<\/a>.<\/p>\n

As you will see, Judge Jones states that, \u201cthe Archdiocese has complied with the Charter in all material respects.  It has faithfully followed its policies and procedures and responded appropriately to abuse complaints, and is committed to supporting victim-survivors of abuse.\u201d and that she has \u201cconfirmed that no Archdiocesan priest or deacon against whom there is a substantiated complaint of abuse of a minor is in ministry today.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judge Jones also makes some thoughtful recommendations, including that we expand our formal reporting protocol with the ten New York-area District Attorneys to cover allegations of sexual abuse of non-consenting adults, that we conduct annual child protection training, that we continue to compensate victim-survivors through the Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program<\/em><\/a>, and that we undertake a number of technological enhancements to ensure protocols are always followed.  A number of these recommendations are already in the process of being implemented, and I can assure you that the others will soon be as well.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d like to express my sincere gratitude not only to Judge Jones and her team for the weeks and months of hard work they have devoted to this important task, but also to you, God\u2019s people of this Archdiocese, for your willingness to allow me to work to regain your trust.  It is my hope and prayer that the release of these findings and recommendations will be a big step forward in that process.<\/p>\n
