Nancy Pelosi made $130M in stock profits during Congress career<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before first taking Congressional office in 1987, the then-47-year-old freshman and her hubby, venture capitalist Paul Pelosi, reported between $610,000 and $785,000 in stocks in their portfolio, according to a copy of her \u201chand delivered\u201d 1987 financial disclosure form.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They held a dozen stocks, including CitiBank, and in many companies no longer publicly traded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That portfolio has soared to $133.7 million today, according to the latest estimates from Quiver Quantitative<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even with the power of compound interest, the windfall represents a staggering 14.5% average annual return \u2014 beating out the S&P 500, NASDAQ and Dow Jones performances over those years…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, their investment portfolio pulled in an estimated 54% return<\/a>, more than double the S&P 500\u2019s 25% gain \u2014 and beating every large hedge fund, according to numbers in Bloomberg\u2019s end-of-year tally.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

People in government who have access to economic, and policy information which the rest of us don’t have, should have to either (1) put their money in a blind trust or (2) be restricted completely from holding individual stocks and only be able to use the same investment vehicles – about seven low cost mutual funds – which are in the government employee thrift savings program. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
