{"id":1526,"date":"2018-08-03T05:55:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T05:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/?p=1526"},"modified":"2025-09-29T16:56:55","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T16:56:55","slug":"catholic-catechism-further-changes-opposing-the-death-penalty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/?p=1526","title":{"rendered":"Catholic catechism &#8211; further changes opposing the death penalty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e2022ad3a5b39d200b-pi\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Death penalty no\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d834525a2f69e2022ad3a5b39d200b img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e2022ad3a5b39d200b-150wi\" style=\"width: 125px;\" title=\"Death penalty no\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>UPDATE<\/strong><\/span>: Numerous commentaries on this which I will post in next several days.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The amendments approved by the Pope In full continuity with Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict. <em><strong>FULL DISCLOSURE<\/strong>: Farandaville opposes the death penalty.&#0160;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/pope\/news\/2018-08\/pope-francis-cdf-ccc-death-penalty-revision-ladaria.html\">After an audience with Pope Francis earlier this year, and following his approval, the Vatican\u2019s CDF says it has made changes to the CCC on the death penalty according to which capital punishment is inadmissible.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The decision was announced by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in a \u2018Letter to the Bishops\u2019 dated 1 August and signed by the Prefect, Cardinal Luis Francisco Ladaria.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The new text<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>The death penalty<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>2267. Recourse to the death penalty on the part of legitimate authority, following a fair trial, was long considered an appropriate response to the gravity of certain crimes and an acceptable, albeit extreme, means of safeguarding the common good.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Today, however, there is an increasing awareness that the dignity of the person is not lost even after the commission of very serious crimes.&#0160; In addition, a new understanding has emerged of the significance of penal sanctions imposed by the state.&#0160; Lastly, more effective systems of detention have been developed, which ensure the due protection of citizens but, at the same time, do not definitively deprive the guilty of the possibility of redemption.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Consequently, the Church teaches, in the light of the Gospel, that \u201cthe death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person\u201d,<sup>[1]<\/sup> and she works with determination for its abolition worldwide\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">[1] FRANCIS, <em>Address to Participants in the Meeting organized by the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization<\/em>, 11 October 2017: <em>L\u2019Osservatore Romano<\/em>, 13 October 2017.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The previous text<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">According to the previous text of paragraph 2267, the Church did not exclude recourse to the death penalty in \u201cvery rare, if not practically nonexistent\u201d circumstances:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>2267. Assuming that the guilty party&#39;s identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people&#39;s safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity to the dignity of the human person.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm &#8211; without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself &#8211; the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity &quot;are very rare, if not practically nonexistent.&quot;<sup>68<\/sup><\/em><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Revision in continuity with preceding Magisterium<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In the <a href=\"http:\/\/press.vatican.va\/content\/salastampa\/it\/bollettino\/pubblico\/2018\/08\/02\/0556\/01210.html#letteraing\" rel=\"external nofollow\">Letter to the Bishops<\/a> &#0160;Cardinal Ladaria explained that the revision of n. 2267 of the CCC &#0160;&#0160;\u201cexpresses an authentic development of doctrine that is not in contradiction with the prior teachings of the Magisterium\u201d and said \u201cthese teachings, in fact, can be explained in the light of the primary responsibility of the public authority to protect the common good in a social context in which the penal sanctions were understood differently, and had developed in an environment in which it was more difficult to guarantee that the criminal could not repeat his crime\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Pope John Paul II\u2019s appeal to abolish death penalty<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Ladaria recalled that John Paul II asked that &#0160;the teaching on the death penalty be reformulated to better reflect the development of the doctrine that centers on the clearer awareness of the Church for the respect due to every human life affirming that &#0160;\u201cNot even a murderer loses his personal dignity, and God himself pledges to guarantee this.\u201d Ladaria said that in many occasions John Paul II intervened for the elimination of capital punishment describing it as \u201ccruel and unnecessary.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Pope Benedict XVI<\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In the letter Cardinal Ladaria also recalled Benedict XVI who appealed for \u201cthe attention of society\u2019s leaders to the need to make every effort to eliminate the death penalty\u201d and encouraged &#0160;\u201cpolitical and legislative initiatives being promoted in a growing number of countries to eliminate the death penalty and to continue the substantive progress made in conforming penal law both to the human dignity of prisoners and the effective maintenance of public order.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UPDATE: Numerous commentaries on this which I will post in next several days.
