In 2009 Brigid was arrested on the ND campus – she was protesting Obama’s being awarded an honorary law degree. I was in my office and Tim called me up and said “Mom’s on TV. She’s being arrested. I called her and her phone rang.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Friday, February 27, students will hold a \u201cMarch on the Dome\u201d in what will be the latest escalation in the ongoing battle to prevent Professor Susan Ostermann\u2019s appointment to head the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to an email sent by The Sycamore Trust, the march is being organized by two students, Luke Woodyard and Gabe Ortner. The Sycamore Trust is an alumni group that seeks to protect Notre Dame\u2019s Catholic identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ortner was quoted in the email as having described Ostermann\u2019s appointment as \u201cthe last straw in a long series of University actions counter to Notre Dame\u2019s Catholic identity.\u201d Woodyard noted that Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend Bishop Kevin Rhoades \u201cdid not urge us to sit silently and watch our Lady\u2019s University fall before our eyes; he gave us a clear call to action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other groups sponsoring the march include Notre Dame Right to Life, Knights of Columbus Council 1477, The Irish Rover<\/em> newspaper, Students for Child-Oriented Policy (SCOP), Militia of the Immaculata, and Children of Mary. Longtime Notre Dame professor Fr. Bill Miscamble, CSC will lead a blessing of candles while the Rosary will be prayed at the school\u2019s famous Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes after several students address those who gather at the rally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notre Dame administrators have steadfastly refused to listen to the growing<\/a> number of voices, both laity and clergy, who are demanding Ostermann not be given the promotion. Over the last several weeks, multiple bishops have publicly applauded Rhoades for his defense of the faith.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bishop Michael Olson of Fort Worth, Texas, published a post on social media platform X stating that he supports Rhoades\u2019 efforts and that Notre Dame should rescind Ostermann\u2019s appointment. Bishop Robert Barron also weighed in on the matter. In a lengthy X post, he noted that Ostermann is \u201cnot simply \u2018pro-choice\u2019 on the question of abortion; she is a sharp critic of the pro-life position and those who advocate it.\u201d He added that her promotion would be \u201crepugnant to the identity and mission of that great center of Catholic learning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
