I saw the game on our beautiful black and white TV, and remember how forlorn Yogi Berra looked, standing in left field and seeing the ball go over the fence.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a nice article and includes a video of the homer.  I did not know Mazeroski was in the Hall of Fame &#8211; he had a 17 year career with the Pirates. On an interesting Yankee footnote, this was the only World Series in history that a player on the losing team was named the MVP. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bobby_Richardson\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bobby_Richardson\">Bobby Richardson<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/21\/sports\/baseball\/bill-mazeroski-dead.html?campaign_id=2&amp;emc=edit_th_20260222&amp;instance_id=171462&amp;nl=today%27s-headlines&amp;regi_id=87616590&amp;segment_id=215638&amp;user_id=1c634a87d1656cc79c8753416632bbac\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/21\/sports\/baseball\/bill-mazeroski-dead.html?campaign_id=2&amp;emc=edit_th_20260222&amp;instance_id=171462&amp;nl=today%27s-headlines&amp;regi_id=87616590&amp;segment_id=215638&amp;user_id=1c634a87d1656cc79c8753416632bbac\">It was Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, when an infielder known for his glove, not his bat, crushed the powerful Yankees with one swing, bringing joy to Pittsburgh.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"230\" height=\"219\" src=\"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/bill-mazeroski.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15601\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>What ended a seesaw contest that afternoon became one of baseball\u2019s most re-enacted moments, though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/08\/sports\/baseball\/carmen-berra-yogis-wife-dies-at-85.html\">Carmen Berra<\/a>, whose husband was the Yankees left fielder that afternoon, always refused to relive it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI still can\u2019t watch that replay,\u201d she later told the sportswriter Bill Madden for his 2003 book \u201cPride of October: What It Was to Be Young and a Yankee.\u201d \u201cThe saddest moment I ever had in baseball was sitting in the stands, seeing Yogi standing there in left field, helpless to do anything but watch that ball go over the fence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once they got over their shock, the Yankees, and their fans, felt robbed. The New Yorkers had won their three games by ridiculously lopsided scores \u2014 16-3, 10-0 and 12-0 \u2014 while the Pirates had squeaked by in theirs by a grand total of seven runs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ugh.
