We\u2019re fine with people who don\u2019t look like us, as long as they think like us.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"102\" data-total-count=\"474\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">O.K., that\u2019s a little harsh. But consider George Yancey, a sociologist who is black and evangelical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"160\" data-total-count=\"634\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cOutside of academia I faced more problems as a black,\u201d he told me. \u201cBut inside academia I face more problems as a Christian, and it is not even close.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"225\" data-total-count=\"859\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I\u2019ve been thinking about this because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kristof\/posts\/10153882635067891\">on Facebook<\/a> recently I wondered aloud whether universities stigmatize conservatives and undermine intellectual diversity. The scornful reaction from my fellow liberals proved the point.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"116\" data-total-count=\"975\" id=\"story-continues-1\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cMuch of the \u2018conservative\u2019 worldview consists of ideas that are known empirically to be false,\u201d said Carmi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"52\" data-total-count=\"1027\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cThe truth has a liberal slant,\u201d wrote Michelle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"100\" data-total-count=\"1127\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWhy stop there?\u201d asked Steven. \u201cHow about we make faculties more diverse by hiring idiots?<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"100\" data-total-count=\"1127\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">To me, the conversation illuminated primarily liberal arrogance \u2014 the implication that conservatives don\u2019t have anything significant to add to the discussion. My Facebook followers have incredible compassion for war victims in South Sudan, for kids who have been trafficked, even for abused chickens, but no obvious empathy for conservative scholars facing discrimination.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"288\" data-total-count=\"2454\">This is almost funny. Almost &#8230; but not quite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"288\" data-total-count=\"2454\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">One study found that only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conservativecriminology.com\/uploads\/5\/6\/1\/7\/56173731\/lounsbery_9-25.pdf\" title=\"Study (pdf).\">2 percent<\/a> of English professors are Republicans (although a large share are independents).<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"145\" data-total-count=\"2599\" style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In contrast, some 18 percent of social scientists say they are Marxist.
