No, this column is not about the deprivation and suffering in Marxist regimes like Cuba or Venezuela. Even in a society as wealthy as the U.K., dysfunctional government-run medicine has lately produced a debate on how best to provide treatment in hospital hallways when there are no rooms available for patients. <\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0 0 18px 0;\">Ben Spencer <a href=\"https:\/\/bestoftheweb.cmail19.com\/t\/d-l-sydjkz-jlddttdkjj-d\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" style=\"color: #0274b6; text-decoration: underline;\" target=\"_blank\">reports<\/a> for The Sunday Times on one patient\u2019s recent experience:<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; padding: 0 0 0 30px; margin: 0 0 18px 0;\">As soon as Patricia Sillitoe fell, she knew she was in trouble. But she did not realise it would be 23 hours until she would finally get into a hospital bed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; padding: 0 0 0 30px; margin: 0 0 18px 0;\">It was 2am last Saturday when the 90-year-old fell on the bathroom floor, in her home in Carshalton, south London. Unable to stand, she slowly crawled to the bedroom \u201cthen flicked the light on and off hoping that my neighbour would see it\u201d. Fortunately her friend is an early riser \u2014 at 6am she spotted Sillitoe\u2019s signal, let herself in with the spare key and dialled 999.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; padding: 0 0 0 30px; margin: 0 0 18px 0;\">After a four-hour wait for the ambulance, the widowed grandmother was taken to nearby St Helier Hospital\u2026 When she finally got a bed, more than 14 hours after she arrived, every bay was full. With dozens of other patients, she was wheeled into the corridor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-style: italic; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 18px;\">*******************************<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-k3zb6l-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\" data-type=\"paragraph\">Alex Croft <a class=\"css-1h1us5y-StyledLink el06won0\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/a-e-doctors-new-guidance-dangerous-nhs-b2664675.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recently reported<\/a> in the U.K.\u2019s Independent:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"css-oqk0mc-Blockquote e1w9lx6l0\" data-type=\"blockquote\"><p>Top emergency doctors have criticised a new guide on how to treat patients in corridors, warning it is \u201cnormalising the dangerous\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"css-oqk0mc-Blockquote e1w9lx6l0\" data-type=\"blockquote\"><p>New guidance produced by NHS England in September on how to provide \u201csafe and good quality care\u201d in \u201ctemporary\u201d spaces.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"css-oqk0mc-Blockquote e1w9lx6l0\" data-type=\"blockquote\"><p>The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) has denounced the guide as \u201cnonsensical\u201d and \u201cout of touch\u201d, saying that it is \u201cnot possible to provide safe and good quality care\u201d in corridors and cupboards in a new position statement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"css-oqk0mc-Blockquote e1w9lx6l0\" data-type=\"blockquote\"><p>While acknowledging that corridor care is \u201cnot acceptable\u201d, the guidance says hospitals are having to use temporary spaces more regularly \u2013 and use is no longer \u201cin extremis\u201d. It advises staff on how they can deliver the \u201csafest, most effective and highest quality care possible\u201d in such circumstances.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"css-k3zb6l-Paragraph e1e4oisd0\" data-type=\"paragraph\">Aiming to provide the highest quality of unacceptable care? Patients deserve better than government-run medicine, and the road to reform is to move toward more market discipline, more price signals, more customer-driven care and yes, more profit-driven competition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not that could not happen in, say, NY City.
