British grandfather celebrates beating three types of cancer in a year with trek to South Pole <\/a><\/p>\nDoctors operated almost immediately, removing parts of his large and small intestines, stomach muscles and five lymph nodes.<\/p>\n
Mr McIntosh thought he was cured, and seven months later scaled Kilimanjaro \u2013 taking less than three days to do so.<\/p>\n
But then he was diagnosed with skin cancer, needing to have moles removed from his face, hands and back.<\/p>\n
And in spring 2013 he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which required a seven hour operation. Unbelievably, none of the cancers were connected \u2013 it was all, his doctors said, bad luck.<\/p>\n
"I thought to myself, I'm still alive, so I should do something to help other people make it," he said. "No one wants to hear about cancer, but everyone likes stories of physical feats. That's when I hit on the idea of trekking to the South Pole."<\/p>\n
