He was a featured commentator on a PBS documentary years ago about John Paul II. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/shows\/pope\/\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\">John Paul II: The Millennial Pope<\/a> and that&#39;s when I first heard of him.<\/p>\n<p>Then I read his book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/God-at-Ritz-Attraction-Infinity\/dp\/0824524721\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1415421645&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=god+at+the+ritz\" target=\"_self\">God at the Ritz: Attraction to Infinity<\/a>. Exceptional series of short essays. Great mind, with a dry sense of humor.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"http:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e201b8d08caa36970c-pi\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Lorenzo albacete\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d834525a2f69e201b8d08caa36970c img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e201b8d08caa36970c-120wi\" style=\"width: 120px;\" title=\"Lorenzo albacete\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/2014\/11\/05\/nyregion\/lorenzo-albacete-theologian-and-scientist-dies-at-73.html?referrer=&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_self\" title=\"\">Lorenzo Albacete, Theologian and Confidant of Popes, Dies at 73<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He was a consultant to several PBS \u201cFrontline\u201d documentaries on the church; wrote articles about religion, some for The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker; and, in 2003, published a collection of essays, \u201cGod at the Ritz,\u201d which made the case for Christian faith in a science-based culture. (A reviewer for the neoconservative magazine The Weekly Standard, praising the book, said of its author, \u201cMaybe you haven\u2019t heard of him, since he spends most of his considerable talent reaching out to liberals.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">******<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In his funeral homily at St. Mary\u2019s Church on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where Monsignor Albacete had often celebrated Mass, Cardinal Sean Patrick O\u2019Malley, the archbishop of Boston and a longtime friend, told a story about Monsignor Albacete and his friendship with the future John Paul II. A prolific letter-writer, Archbishop Wojtyla followed up their initial encounter in Washington with letters describing and recommending books he was reading. The young priest was not much of a correspondent, though, and greeted the letters with an \u201coh boy, this guy again\u201d shrug.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Returning to Washington in 1979 as pope, Cardinal O\u2019Malley said, John Paul II greeted Father Albacete in a receiving line, fixing him with a look roughly equivalent to a grab of the lapels and saying, \u201cLorenzo, maybe now you will answer my letters?\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A fascinating priest-intellectual.
