Alonzo H. Cushing, a Union artillery<br \/>\nofficer, arrayed his unit on Gettysburg&#8217;s Cemetery Ridge. In the ensuing<br \/>\nConfederate infantry assault that came to be known as Pickett&#8217;s Charge,<br \/>\nCushing was shot twice, the second bullet tearing through his stomach<br \/>\nand groin. The wounded officer kept up the fight, clutching his<br \/>\nintestines as he commanded the artillery battery. Then Cushing was hit a<br \/>\nthird time, struck in the mouth by a bullet that exited at the base of<br \/>\nhis skull. The defenders of Cemetery Ridge eventually repulsed the<br \/>\nConfederate advance, a pivotal moment in the Union victory that turned<br \/>\nthe tide of the Civil War.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">One hundred and fifty years later, Alonzo Cushing&#8217;s heroism at<br \/>\nGettysburg is finally moving closer to being recognized with the<br \/>\nposthumous awarding of a Medal of Honor.
