Well worth reading in it&#39;s entirety.&#0160;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/14\/opinion\/my-medical-choice.html?nl=todaysheadlines&amp;emc=edit_th_20130514&amp;_r=0\" target=\"_self\">My  Medical Choice<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\nMY MOTHER fought <a class=\"meta-classifier\" href=\"http:\/\/health.nytimes.com\/health\/guides\/disease\/cancer\/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier\" title=\"In-depth reference and news articles about Cancer.\">cancer<\/a><br \/>\nfor almost a decade and died at 56. She held out long enough to meet<br \/>\nthe first of her grandchildren and to hold them in her arms. But my<br \/>\nother children will never have the chance to know her and experience how<br \/>\nloving and gracious she was.        <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\nWe often speak of \u201cMommy\u2019s mommy,\u201d and I find myself trying to explain<br \/>\nthe illness that took her away from us. They have asked if the same<br \/>\ncould happen to me. I have always told them not to worry, but the truth<br \/>\nis I carry a \u201cfaulty\u201d gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of<br \/>\ndeveloping <a class=\"meta-classifier\" href=\"http:\/\/health.nytimes.com\/health\/guides\/disease\/breast-cancer\/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier\" title=\"In-depth reference and news articles about Breast cancer.\">breast cancer<\/a> and <a class=\"meta-classifier\" href=\"http:\/\/health.nytimes.com\/health\/guides\/disease\/ovarian-cancer\/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier\" title=\"In-depth reference and news articles about Ovarian Cancer.\">ovarian cancer<\/a>.        <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\nMy doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/14\/opinion\/my-medical-choice.html?nl=todaysheadlines&amp;emc=edit_th_20130514&amp;_r=0&amp;pagewanted=print#\" id=\"_GPLITA_1\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Click to Continue &gt; by Browse to Save\">risk of breast cancer<\/a> and a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.        <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\nOnly a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/14\/opinion\/my-medical-choice.html?nl=todaysheadlines&amp;emc=edit_th_20130514&amp;_r=0&amp;pagewanted=print#\" id=\"_GPLITA_0\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Click to Continue &gt; by Browse to Save\">gene mutation<\/a>. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a <a href=\"http:\/\/cancer.stanford.edu\/information\/geneticsAndCancer\/types\/herbocs.html\">65 percent<\/a> risk of getting it, on average.        <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\nOnce I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to<br \/>\nminimize the risk as much I could. I made a decision to have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/cancertopics\/factsheet\/Therapy\/preventive-mastectomy\">preventive double mastectomy<\/a>. I started with the breasts, as my risk of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/14\/opinion\/my-medical-choice.html?nl=todaysheadlines&amp;emc=edit_th_20130514&amp;_r=0&amp;pagewanted=print#\" id=\"_GPLITA_2\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" title=\"Click to Continue &gt; by Browse to Save\">breast cancer<\/a> is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex.        <\/p>\n<p>Jolie then goes into some detail about the procedures, and finishes with this &#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\nI acknowledge that there are many wonderful holistic doctors working on<br \/>\nalternatives to surgery. My own regimen will be posted in due course on<br \/>\nthe Web site of the Pink Lotus Breast Center. I hope that this will be<br \/>\nhelpful to other women.        <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\n<a class=\"meta-classifier\" href=\"http:\/\/health.nytimes.com\/health\/guides\/disease\/breast-cancer\/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier\" title=\"In-depth reference and news articles about Breast Cancer.\">Breast cancer<\/a><br \/>\nalone kills some 458,000 people each year, according to the World<br \/>\nHealth Organization, mainly in low- and middle-income countries. It has<br \/>\ngot to be a priority to ensure that more women can access gene testing<br \/>\nand lifesaving preventive treatment, whatever their means and<br \/>\nbackground, wherever they live. The cost of testing for BRCA1 and BRCA2,<br \/>\nat more than $3,000 in the United States, remains an obstacle for many<br \/>\nwomen.        <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\nI choose not to keep my story private because there are many women who<br \/>\ndo not know that they might be living under the shadow of cancer. It is<br \/>\nmy hope that they, too, will be able to get gene tested, and that if<br \/>\nthey have a high risk they, too, will know that they have strong<br \/>\noptions.        <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\nLife comes with many challenges.
