Tolkien on the Eucharist + comments on war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As many people know, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._R._R._Tolkien\" target=\"_self\">Tolkien<\/a> was a fervent Catholic; his wife, not so much.<\/p>\n<h4><em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&quot;The only cure for sagging or fainting faith is Communion.<br \/>\nThough always Itself, perfect and complete and inviolate, the Blessed<br \/>\nSacrament does not operate completely and once for all in any of us.<br \/>\nLike the act of Faith it must be continuous and grow by exercise.<br \/>\nFrequency is of the highest effect. Seven times a week is more<br \/>\nnourishing than seven times at intervals.&quot;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; J.R.R. Tolkien<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here&#39;s a couple of more quotes from Tolkien &#8211; on war (Tolkien served in the trenches in WW 1 and lost several close friends):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Tolkien criticized Allied use of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Total_war\" title=\"Total war\">total war<\/a> tactics against civilians from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazi_Germany\" title=\"Nazi Germany\">Nazi Germany<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imperial_Japan\" title=\"Imperial Japan\">Imperial Japan<\/a>. In a 1945 letter to his son Christopher, he wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>We were supposed to have reached a stage of civilization in which it<br \/>\nmight still be necessary to execute a criminal, but not to gloat, or to<br \/>\nhang his wife and child by him while the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orc_%28Middle-earth%29\" title=\"Orc (Middle-earth)\">orc<\/a>-crowd<br \/>\nhooted. The destruction of Germany, be it 100 times merited, is one of<br \/>\nthe most appalling world-catastrophes. Well, well,\u2014you and I can do<br \/>\nnothing about it. And that [should] be a measure of the amount of guilt<br \/>\nthat can justly be assumed to attach to any member of a country who is<br \/>\nnot a member of its actual Government. Well the first War of the<br \/>\nMachines seems to be drawing to its final inconclusive chapter\u2014leaving,<br \/>\nalas, everyone the poorer, many bereaved or maimed and millions dead,<br \/>\nand only one thing triumphant: the Machines.<sup id=\"cite_ref-109\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._R._R._Tolkien#cite_note-109\">[109]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He also reacted with anger at the excesses of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anti-German_sentiment\" title=\"Anti-German sentiment\">anti-German<\/a> propaganda during the war. In 1944, he wrote in a letter to his son Christopher:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8230; it is distressing to see the press grovelling in the gutter as low as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Goebbels\" title=\"Joseph Goebbels\">Goebbels<\/a><br \/>\nin his prime, shrieking that any German commander who holds out in a<br \/>\ndesperate situation (when, too, the military needs of his side clearly<br \/>\nbenefit) is a drunkard, and a besotted fanatic. &#8230; There was a solemn<br \/>\narticle in the local paper seriously advocating systematic exterminating<br \/>\nof the entire German nation as the only proper course after military<br \/>\nvictory: because, if you please, they are <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rattlesnake\" title=\"Rattlesnake\">rattlesnakes<\/a>, and don&#39;t know the difference between good and evil! (What of the writer?) The Germans have just as much right to declare the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poles\" title=\"Poles\">Poles<\/a> and Jews exterminable vermin, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Untermensch\" title=\"Untermensch\">subhuman<\/a>, as we have to select the Germans: in other words, no right, whatever they have done.<sup id=\"cite_ref-110\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._R._R._Tolkien#cite_note-110\">[110]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">He was horrified by the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki\" title=\"Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\">atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki<\/a>, referring to the scientists of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manhattan_Project\" title=\"Manhattan Project\">Manhattan Project<\/a> as &quot;these lunatic physicists&quot; and &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tower_of_Babel\" title=\"Tower of Babel\">Babel<\/a>-builders&quot;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-atom_111-0\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/J._R._R._Tolkien#cite_note-atom-111\">[111]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>:<\/p>\n<p><em><\/p>\n<p>&#0160;<\/p>\n<p><\/em><\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As many people know, Tolkien was a fervent Catholic; his wife, not so much. &quot;The only cure for sagging or fainting faith is Communion.
