For some reason they put it in the retirment area of the business section, instead of in health and fitness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/09\/16\/business\/retirementspecial\/a-test-keeps-lifeguards-fit-for-duty.html?_r=2&amp;WT.mc_id=BU-D-I-NYT-MOD-MOD-M225a-ROS-1011-HDR&amp;WT.mc_ev=click\" target=\"_self\">\u201cWe\u2019re really proud of our older lifeguards,\u201d said Mr. Gorman of the New York State office of parks. \u201cTo me, these guys are like Jack LaLanne.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In order to return for another season of sun, surf and rescues (on average, a lifeguard at these popular beaches is involved in about 15 to 20 rescues a season, said George Gorman, deputy regional director of the New York State office of parks) the experienced lifeguards have to pass a state-administered rehire test every spring. The exam is meant to test their speed in the water and on land.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The test consists of a 100-meter pool swim that must be completed in 1 minute, 20 seconds and a quarter-mile run in 2 minutes, 10 seconds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cIf you don\u2019t pass, it doesn\u2019t matter how many years you\u2019ve been there,\u201d said Bruce Meirowitz, 60, a retired high school art teacher from Sound Beach, N.Y., who has been a lifeguard since he was 17.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the NY Times a few days ago.
