As previously mentioned here<\/a>, Brigid’s niece June and husband Andrew were with us for a few days – December 30th to January 2nd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They’d had to travel from London to Philadelphia  and then take Amtrak to Croton, because the winter storm made a mess of travelling by air. Their London to Newark flight on the 28th was cancelled and they couldn’t have gotten a flight to NY until after the 1st of the year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, after a very long day, they made it to our house on Thursday, the 30th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day we took a ride up to Newburgh – to walk the “Walkway Over the Hudson”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With a couple of scenic stops on the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The viewing spot across from Bear Mountain (on 202)that looks south down the Hudson. There were a few people observing bald eagles across the river on the area called Iona Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

June has a really cool Sony camera, that can stitch together multiple photos to make a spectacular panorama<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We finally got to our destination around 3 o’clock – the Walkway Over the Hudson<\/a>, which is actually a State Park. It is the old previously-abandoned-for-many-years Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge. Brigid and I had never been up to it, so it was a good destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bridge was dramatically repaired and modified over a period of years, and only recently opened as a broad pedestrian bridge. Right across the Hudson. Pretty cool I thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I actually learned a fair bit on our little walk. Who knew that Poughkeepsie had several highly regarded breweries in the late 19th century? Or there was such a thing as the Poughkeepsie Whaling Company?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We stopped for dinner at The Stadium<\/strong> in Garrison. Then it was a relatively early bed even though it was New Year’s Eve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

June and Andrew went into Manhattan on New Year’s Day – and did a lot more walking. We took them to JFK airport the next day, as they headed out for their long trip going west, back to Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
