Considering his disability, he has lead an amazing and creative life. He had&#0160;a 30&#0160;+ year career&#0160;at Cambridge, and he just retired . <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e2013486fadd46970c-pi\" style=\"DISPLAY: inline\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Stephen_Hawking_050506\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d834525a2f69e2013486fadd46970c \" src=\"https:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e2013486fadd46970c-200wi\" style=\"WIDTH: 160px\" title=\"Stephen_Hawking_050506\" \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Back in 1988 he wrote a very popular book on cosmology, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/A_Brief_History_of_Time\">A Brief History of Time<\/a>, which I read at the time. &#0160;<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, he&#0160;has just co-wrote a new&#0160;book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Grand-Design-Stephen-Hawking\/dp\/0553805371\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1283744190&amp;sr=8-1\">The Grand Design<\/a> in which he pursues one of his favorite speculations, trying to prove God&#39;s non-existence. &#0160;<\/p>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal this past Saturday&#0160;had an excerpt directly from the book. The link may not be accessible if you are not a Wall Street Journal subscriber, but here it is &#8211; <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704206804575467921609024244.html?mod=WSJ_LifeStyle_Lifestyle_5\">Why God Did Not Create the Universe &#8211; There is a sound scientific explanation for the making of our world\u2014no gods required<\/a> <br \/>&#0160;<\/p>\n<p>And here is&#0160;the&#0160;direct quote&#0160;that gets to the heart of the matter &#8211; <\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>As recent advances in cosmology suggest, the laws of gravity and quantum theory allow universes to appear spontaneously from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist. It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper and set the universe going.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Huh? That&#39;s it? <\/p>\n<p>There is &quot;nothing&quot; but the &quot;nothing&quot; is governed by &quot;the laws of gravity and quantum theory&quot;? If there&#39;s &quot;nothing&quot;, where did &quot;the laws of gravity and quantum theory&quot; come from? Aren&#39;t they &quot;something&quot;? <\/p>\n<p>There were 1243 comments left to this WSJ feature (when last I looked).
