It would mean that exercise was easier in the morning. Of course, it seemed harder to me, but I could have been deluding myself. Not really, Dr. Atkinson said. It actually <span class=\"italic\"><em>is<\/em><\/span> harder to exercise in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost components (strength, power, speed) of athletic performance are worst in the early hours of the morning,\u201d he wrote in an e-mail message. \u201cRatings of perceived exertion during exercise have generally been found to be highest in the early morning.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I certainly&#0160; find this to be true.<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>\u201cIs a heart rate of 140 in the morning indicative of the same level of workout cost as in the afternoon?\u201d asked Dr. Smolensky, a visiting professor at the <a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/u\/university_of_texas\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\" title=\"More articles about the University of Texas\"><font color=\"#004276\">University of Texas<\/font><\/a> Health Sciences Center in Houston.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say no,\u201d he added. \u201cExercise physiologists say you should be able to perform at the same level with a heart rate of 140 in the morning as in the afternoon or early evening. But chronobiologists say your capacity to generate and tolerate a higher heart rate is better later in the day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the afternoon and evening,\u201d Dr. Smolensky said, \u201cyou are in a different biological state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But, he added, all this applies to people who are regular exercisers, who work out vigorously three or more times a week.
