{"id":3546,"date":"2009-12-07T04:05:00","date_gmt":"2009-12-07T04:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/?p=3546"},"modified":"2025-09-27T19:56:27","modified_gmt":"2025-09-27T19:56:27","slug":"2nd-day-of-the-appalachian-trial-overnighter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/?p=3546","title":{"rendered":"2nd day of the Appalachian Trail overnighter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Posted about the first day here. <a href=\"http:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/folly\/2009\/12\/my-solo-overnighter-on-the-appalachian-trail.html\"><font color=\"#800080\">My solo overnighter on the Appalachian Trail<\/font><\/a>, when I was out the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second day was an 8.7 mile hike. Miles&nbsp;five through&nbsp;seven, from Rte 52 going south and west, were unexpectedly <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">tough<\/span>. Narrow, rocky, up and down, the trail&nbsp;totally covered with leaves. I actually had four falls on this section, each of them a slip on leaves that were covering rocks. It&#8217;s a good thing the trail was dry, or I&#8217;d have really had troubles. With hindsight, if I&#8217;d known the trail was going to be this difficult at this time of year,&nbsp;I would have deferred it until the spring, or done it with other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it did work out. Egbert, about&nbsp;a half mile from the shelter. This is also where I took the first video, with the link above. If you know the highway, you&#8217;ll possibly recognize the rest area, which is a few miles south of where 84 intersects with Rte 684.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e20120a71f6b54970b-pi\" style=\"DISPLAY: inline\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_8382\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d834525a2f69e20120a71f6b54970b \" src=\"https:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e20120a71f6b54970b-500wi\"><\/a> <br><a href=\"http:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e201287621c9ce970c-pi\" style=\"DISPLAY: inline\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_8383\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d834525a2f69e201287621c9ce970c \" src=\"https:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e201287621c9ce970c-500wi\"><\/a> <br>Ok, a pastoral view on the trail between&nbsp;Rte 84 and 52.&nbsp;I just liked it. And it&#8217;s right before I crossed Rte 52, and the tricky part of the Trail began. Including my four slips\/falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e20120a71f71ff970b-pi\" style=\"DISPLAY: inline\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_8397\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d834525a2f69e20120a71f71ff970b \" src=\"https:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e20120a71f71ff970b-500wi\"><\/a> <br>Now west of Rte 52 and two shots of one of the very&nbsp;few animals&nbsp;I saw. In fact,&nbsp;I can&#8217;t recall seeing any&nbsp;other animal at all. This deer must know there&#8217;s no hunting along the Appalachian Trail! I was on the Trail about forty vertical feet above the deer and probably around 110 feet away. Hosner. This is near where I took the second video linked above. He was going to do some&nbsp;work on the Mt. Hosner Trail, which crosses the A.T.. No doubt a volunteer. We chatted for a couple of minutes,&nbsp;and I confirmed that the Taconic Parkway where the A.T. crossed was only about a mile and a half away.&nbsp;&nbsp;He was the eighth and last person I saw on the Trail that day. They were all day hiking<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e201287621e93b970c-pi\" style=\"DISPLAY: inline\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_8441\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d834525a2f69e201287621e93b970c \" src=\"https:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e201287621e93b970c-500wi\"><\/a> <br>Still tricky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e20120a71f8956970b-pi\" style=\"DISPLAY: inline\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_8445\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d834525a2f69e20120a71f8956970b \" src=\"https:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e20120a71f8956970b-500wi\"><\/a>&nbsp;<br>I took this picture of where&nbsp;I&#8217;d just come down. You can see that it&#8217;s real easy to slide on the leaves on top of rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e201287621ed77970c-pi\" style=\"DISPLAY: inline\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_8449\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d834525a2f69e201287621ed77970c \" src=\"https:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e201287621ed77970c-500wi\"><\/a> <br>Coming in for a landing &#8211; there&#8217;s the Taconic &#8211; with the underpass to continue the walk barely visible to the left &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e20120a71f8b4b970b-pi\" style=\"DISPLAY: inline\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"IMG_8456\" class=\"asset asset-image at-xid-6a00d834525a2f69e20120a71f8b4b970b \" src=\"https:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e20120a71f8b4b970b-500wi\"><\/a> <br>And a view across the Taconic, 80 yards up from where the Miller Hill Road underpass&nbsp;goes&nbsp;under the Taconic Parkway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/6a00d834525a2f69e201287621f05e970c-500wi.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10969\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/6a00d834525a2f69e201287621f05e970c-500wi.jpg 500w, https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/6a00d834525a2f69e201287621f05e970c-500wi-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brigid arrived five minutes after I reached the underpass &#8211; there&#8217;s a Taconic exit and entrance right at Miller Hill Rd. so it was&nbsp;an easy retrieval.&nbsp;I should have taken a picure of her, but I didn&#8217;t. instead, here&#8217;s a shot of where the A.T. continues on the west side of the underpass. I expect I&#8217;ll get on the Trail here, in the spring.
