Web site.\"><font color=\"#004276\">Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/font><\/a> have created prototypes for cancer monitors the size of a grain of rice, small enough to fit easily into the bore of a biopsy needle. Tiny coated particles inside the devices can bind with molecules linked to cancer at the site, creating minuscule clumps that can be detected by a non-invasive scan like an <a href=\"http:\/\/health.nytimes.com\/health\/guides\/test\/mri\/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier\" title=\"In-depth reference and news articles about MRI.\"><font color=\"#004276\">M.R.I.<\/font><\/a>, said Michael J. Cima, a professor of materials science and engineering at <a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/m\/massachusetts_institute_of_technology\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\" title=\"More articles about Massachusetts Institute of Technology\"><font color=\"#004276\">M.I.T.<\/font><\/a> and leader of the team that created the devices.<\/p>\n<p>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Cima is planning a variety of devices, each set up to monitor a different metabolic activity of tissue near a tumor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThings as simple as pH and dissolved oxygen are known to be very good indicators of responses to therapy,\u201d he said. \u201cIf the therapy is having an impact on the survival of that tumor, you\u2019ll see it in the local metabolites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But testing on human patients is years away. \u201cThe next step is to implant these devices in larger animals with <a href=\"http:\/\/health.nytimes.com\/health\/guides\/disease\/tumor\/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier\" title=\"In-depth reference and news articles about Tumor.\"><font color=\"#004276\">tumors<\/font><\/a> that look more like human tumors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He hopes that the devices will eventually lead to a stream of diagnostic information, he said, \u201cto help physicians treat cancer as a chronic disease as opposed to an acute one.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><nyt_author_id><\/nyt_author_id><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#39;s in the works.
