{"id":4148,"date":"2007-05-21T23:15:59","date_gmt":"2007-05-21T23:15:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/?p=4148"},"modified":"2025-09-30T02:17:55","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T02:17:55","slug":"last_sundays_ma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/?p=4148","title":{"rendered":"Last Sunday&#8217;s (May 13th) hike up Bull Hill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Having gone up Sugarloaf mountain the Sunday before, <a href=\"http:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/folly\/2007\/05\/tom_and_joes_su.html\">Tom Faranda&#8217;s Folly: Tom and Joe&#8217;s Sunday climb up Sugarloaf<\/a> I decided to try another nearby hill \/ &#8220;mountain&#8221; in the Lower Hudson Highlands, just north of Cold Spring and south of Sugarloaf. Joe decided he didn&#8217;t want to go so I took off on my own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hike was much tougher then Sugarloaf. Bull Hill is higher and steeper, and twice I lost track of the marked trail. Rather then the 50 plus minutes it took to get to the top of Sugarloaf, it took 90 minutes to get up Bull. And the total round trip was much longer &#8211; 4.5 miles the brochure said. I&#8217;m not sure) you can just see the Newburgh-Beacon bridge<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/bulls_hill_51307_029.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14470\" title=\"Bulls_hill_51307_029\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/bulls_hill_51307_029.jpg 500w, https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/bulls_hill_51307_029-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I got to the summit there was a <del>kid<\/del> young man sitting there by his lonesome and I asked him how high up we were &#8211; I said 8-900 feet and he looked at his typographic map and said &#8220;Oh no, more like 12-1300 feet.&#8221; So I&#8217;m not sure. On the way up I did meet this family group having a picnic, about 75% of the way up. I was puffed, and was amazed to see the little kids! They all seemed cheery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/bulls_hill_51307_019.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14469\" title=\"Bulls_hill_51307_019\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/bulls_hill_51307_019.jpg 500w, https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/bulls_hill_51307_019-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the summit you can either re-trace your steps, or take an initially northern path which then swings west and south, to get you to the car park. Over two and a half miles. That&#8217;s what I did. It goes down steeply and then you hit the Breakneck Ridge stream, and the trail follows the stream. You then come across some abandoned estate houses like this<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>l<a onclick=\"window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'width=800,height=600,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.shared\/image.html?\/photos\/uncategorized\/2007\/05\/21\/bulls_hill_51307_039.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Bulls_hill_51307_039\" height=\"375\" alt=\"Bulls_hill_51307_039\" src=\"https:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/folly\/images\/2007\/05\/21\/bulls_hill_51307_039.jpg\" width=\"500\" border=\"0\"><\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the next five minutes after taking the above picture I saw two 3 to 4 foot black King snakes &#8211; one on each side of the path &#8211; if you look REAL CLOSE at the middle of this picture, to the RIGHT of the trunk, you&#8217;ll just see the back of the first one<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/bulls_hill_51307_041.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/bulls_hill_51307_041.jpg 500w, https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/bulls_hill_51307_041-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I moved further down the trail from Bull Hill, there are more and more intersecting marked trails and there were many more people<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/bulls_hill_51307_044.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14467\" title=\"Bulls_hill_51307_044\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/bulls_hill_51307_044.jpg 500w, https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/05\/bulls_hill_51307_044-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And within three quarter miles or so of the trailhead, it becomes positively crowded. However very few of these people were going up either Bull Hill or Breakneck Ridge.
