Here’s an article about Fr Jon Sobrino, a Jesuit originally from Spain who has spent much of his adult life in South America. He was residing in a Jesuit community in El Salvador in 1989, but was out of the country in Thailand, when six of his confrere’s, as well as their cook and the cook’s daughter were murdered by Salvadoran soldiers. He wrote several sections of a book about the martyrs entitled "Companions of Jesus". A very painful book to read!<\/p>\n

He also knew Cardinal Romero quite well – the Archbishop of San Salvador who was murdered in 1980 while saying Mass. In fact, he wrote a biography of Romero, published in 1990.<\/p>\n

However some of his theological emphases "may cause harm to the faithful", according to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. If you are interested in this sort of thing, do read the whole article.<\/p>\n

Two books on Christology by a pioneer of the liberation theology movement contain statements that are \u201ceither erroneous or dangerous,\u201d according to a formal Vatican notification published today, \u201cand may cause harm to the faithful.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ruling from the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith finds various flaws in the works by Jesuit Fr. Jon Sobrino, a former theological adviser to Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador. Most notably, it complains of insufficient emphasis on the divinity of Christ. <\/p>\n

Contrary to some early reports, the Vatican has not barred Sobrino from teaching or publishing, though a Jesuit spokesperson in Rome said that future disciplinary action has not been ruled out.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
