{"id":583,"date":"2023-07-17T04:59:00","date_gmt":"2023-07-17T04:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/?p=583"},"modified":"2025-09-29T01:56:55","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T01:56:55","slug":"feast-of-carmelite-martyrs-of-compiegn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tomfarandasfolly.com\/?p=583","title":{"rendered":"Memorial of Carmelite martyrs of Compiegne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a good description of the event if you hit the link.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martyrs_of_Compi%C3%A8gne\">They were guillotined on this date in 1794.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The <strong>Martyrs of Compi\u00e8gne<\/strong> were the 16 members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carmelites\" title=\"Carmelites\">Carmel<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compi%C3%A8gne\" title=\"Compi\u00e8gne\">Compi\u00e8gne, France<\/a>: 11 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Discalced_Carmelites\" title=\"Discalced Carmelites\">Discalced Carmelite<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nun\" title=\"Nun\">nuns<\/a>, three <a class=\"mw-redirect\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lay_sisters\" title=\"Lay sisters\">lay sisters<\/a>, and two externs (or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Third_order\" title=\"Third order\">tertiaries<\/a>). They were executed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guillotine\" title=\"Guillotine\">guillotine<\/a> towards the end of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reign_of_Terror\" title=\"Reign of Terror\">Reign of Terror<\/a>, at what is now the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Place_de_la_Nation\" title=\"Place de la Nation\">Place de la Nation<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris\" title=\"Paris\">Paris<\/a> on 17 July 1794, and are venerated as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beatification\" title=\"Beatification\">beatified<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martyr\" title=\"Martyr\">martyrs<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catholic_Church\" title=\"Catholic Church\">Catholic Church<\/a>. Ten days after their execution, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maximilien_Robespierre\" title=\"Maximilien Robespierre\">Maximilien Robespierre<\/a> himself was executed, ending the Reign of Terror.<sup class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martyrs_of_Compi%C3%A8gne#cite_note-listref-b\">[b]<\/a><\/sup><sup class=\"reference\" id=\"cite_ref-opera_1-0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martyrs_of_Compi%C3%A8gne#cite_note-opera-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> Their story has inspired a novella, a motion picture, a television movie, and an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Opera\" title=\"Opera\">opera<\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dialogues_of_the_Carmelites\" title=\"Dialogues of the Carmelites\">Dialogues of the Carmelites<\/a>,<\/em> written by French composer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francis_Poulenc\" title=\"Francis Poulenc\">Francis Poulenc<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">**********************<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">A crowd gathered, as usual, at the Place du Tr\u00f4ne Renvers\u00e9 (now called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Place_de_la_Nation\" title=\"Place de la Nation\">Place de la Nation<\/a>),<sup class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martyrs_of_Compi%C3%A8gne#cite_note-listref-a\">[a]<\/a><\/sup> the site of the executions, to watch, but the sisters showed no fear and forgave their guards. The final song the sisters sang was <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psalm_117\" title=\"Psalm 117\">Psalm 116<\/a>, <em>Laudate Dominum<\/em>.<sup class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martyrs_of_Compi%C3%A8gne#cite_note-listref-a\">[a]<\/a><\/sup> Sister Constance, a novice, the youngest of the group and the first to die, &quot;spontaneously&quot;<sup class=\"reference\" id=\"cite_ref-bush-25_19-0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martyrs_of_Compi%C3%A8gne#cite_note-bush-25-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup> began the chant, but it was cut short by the guillotine blade.
