1<\/span> A psalm of David.<\/span><\/div>\n

I<\/h4>\n

  LORD<\/small>, who may abide in your tent?*<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

  Who may dwell on your holy mountain?*<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

II<\/h4>\n
2 <\/span>Whoever walks without blame,b<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

  doing what is right,<\/p>\n

  speaking truth from the heart;<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Who does not slander with his tongue,<\/span><\/div>\n

  does no harm to a friend,<\/p>\n

  never defames a neighbor;<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Who disdains the wicked,<\/span><\/div>\n

  but honors those who fear the LORD<\/small>;<\/p>\n

  Who keeps an oath despite the cost,<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>lends no money at interest,*<\/sup><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

  accepts no bribe against the innocent.c<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n

  Whoever acts like this<\/p>\n

  shall never be shaken.<\/p>\n

* [Psalm 15<\/a>] The Psalm records a liturgical scrutiny at the entrance to the Temple court (cf. Ps 24:3<\/a>\u20136<\/a>; Is 33:14b<\/a>\u201316<\/a>). The Israelite wishing to be admitted had to ask the Temple official what conduct was appropriate to God\u2019s precincts. Note the emphasis on virtues relating to one\u2019s neighbor.<\/p>\n

* [15:1<\/a>] Your tent<\/span>: the Temple could be referred to as \u201ctent\u201d (Ps 61:5<\/a>; Is 33:20<\/a>), a reference to the tent of the wilderness period and the tent of David (2 Sm 6:17<\/a>; 7:2<\/a>), predecessors of the Temple. Holy mountain<\/span>: a venerable designation of the divine abode (Ps 2:6<\/a>; 3:5<\/a>; 43:3<\/a>; 48:2<\/a>, etc.).<\/p>\n

* [15:5<\/a>] Lends no money at interest<\/span>: lending money in the Old Testament was often seen as assistance to the poor in their distress, not as an investment; making money off the poor by charging interest was thus forbidden (Ex 22:24<\/a>; Lv 25:36<\/a>\u201337<\/a>; Dt 23:20<\/a>).<\/p>\n
