I remember him from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lilies_of_the_Field_(1963_film)\" title=\"Lilies of the Field (1963 film)\">Lilies of the Field<\/a><\/em> which won him an Academy Award. The first African American to win the best actor award. His family was all from the Bahamas (where he died), but he was born in Miami, making him a citizen automatically. I think he was a wonderful actor; very versatile &#8211; able to play a variety of roles. I&#39;m sure <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/In_the_Heat_of_the_Night_(film)\" title=\"In the Heat of the Night (film)\">In the Heat of the Night<\/a><\/em>&#0160; was his most well-known movie.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"asset-img-link\" href=\"https:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e202788064f0bc200d-pi\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Sidney poitier 2\" class=\"asset  asset-image at-xid-6a00d834525a2f69e202788064f0bc200d img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/tomfaranda.typepad.com\/.a\/6a00d834525a2f69e202788064f0bc200d-250wi\" style=\"width: 240px;\" title=\"Sidney poitier 2\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sidney Poitier was 94 years old.
