The classic about the 24 hours of D-Day, June 6th, 1944. A great narrative. Of course it was made into a justly famous movie. But the book is so worth reading. The title comes from something the German General Erwin Rommel said to his staff months before the invasion; that the day of the invasion "Would be The Longest Day" both for the Allies and Germany.
If you do read it, google "Normandy D-Day map" because the one thing the book lacks is a clear understanding of the geography; it's a narrative about the people. But one of the simple maps that pops up on a search is helpful .
