Gone at 89 years old. Coached Notre Dame to the National Football College Championship in 1988 and by all accounts was an even greater man.

UPDATE: from RN – I went to the College he coached before ND – The College of William & Mary. He was asked why he lost a game, and he famously quipped, “We had too many Mary’s and not enough William’s.”
