The hunt is on for the next 007 actor.

“The search for the next James Bond is underway,” said Amazon MGM Studios in a statement. “While we don’t plan to comment on specific details during the casting process, we’re excited to share more news with 007 fans as soon as the time is right.”

While Gold and Amazon MGM have kept the search close to their chests, some information about who they’re auditioning has slipped out. Variety reports that 26-year-old Tom Francis, a Tony nominee for his work opposite Nicole Scherzinger in Jamie Lloyd’s revival of Sunset Boulevard, auditioned for the role over the weekend. While he’s got an Olivier Award for that same theatrical performance, his onscreen resume is rather slight: Francis previously appeared in the final season of You and Jay Kelly, and is set to appear in Peter Berg’s The Mosquito Bowl opposite Nicholas Galitzine and Bill Skarsgård. Still, the new Bond could easily be a relative unknown with a theater background—it’s a formula that worked when casting Craig, who was mostly known as a British stage actor with a few plum supporting roles in films like Layer Cake (2004) and Munich (2005) before he booked 007 in 2006.

Prediction markets are also placing bets on who they think the next Bond might be. As of publishing, the future Mr. Dua Lipa, Eternity’s Callum Turner, sits at the top of Polymarket’s odds, commanding 18% of the market. Also in the running is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who’s long been rumored to have been a top choice for this role. In 2023, reports even indicated that Johnson was close to signing a contract to take over the role—but those reports turned out to be false.
