“Bishop Paprocki: SSPX ‘basically another Protestant sect’ now”

The SSPX is a fringe breakaway group from the Catholic Church which officially went into schism when they took it on themselves to ordain 4 Bishops. I think it’s safe to call them fringe – their own directory lists eight Churches or Chapels in NY State (There are 1,644 Catholic parishes in the state). No doubt the vast majority of SSPX followers are sincere in their beliefs.

Bishop Paprocki is the Bishop of Springfield Illinois and is very orthodox in his teaching. In fact he supports the legitimate form of the Latin Mass, which is available in about 60 parishes in NY State.

Here’s part of an article from LifeSite News and below the article is a 6 minute statement from the Bishop.

SPRINGFIELD, Illinois (LifeSiteNews) — Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Springfield called the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) “another Protestant sect” in a video addressed to his diocese last week, responding to the order’s consecration of four new bishops without a papal mandate earlier this month.

In the video, published July 13 and entitled “The Main Problem with the SSPX,” Paprocki noted that just before the consecrations, the SSPX issued a 154-point profession of faith to Pope Leo XIV and the world’s cardinals that included sharp criticisms of the Second Vatican Council and the post-conciliar reforms. The bishop argued that because the Society rejects certain teachings of the Council and disobeyed the sovereign pontiff by performing the consecrations, it is “basically another Protestant sect.”

The Bishop video here is a good brief statement of the issue –

  1. Just in passing, TF, regarding numbers, perhaps worth noting that Scripture tells us there were over a million men in King David’s census, so counting women & children, likely close to 5 million Israelites altogether. Arguable that a couple centuries later in the time of Elijah, despite the Israel/Judah split, the Israelite population was yet higher.

Among it, again according to Scripture, there but 7000 Israelites who had not ‘kissed the mouth of Baal.’ Possible also that those who did, like their spiritual descendants, were not healed by that mouth.

    • So your point is that just like the 7,000 Israelites out of the millions who did not worship Baal, the SSPX are their spiritual descendants because they oppose Church teachings since 1965? I guess that makes them similar to the protestant reformers who rejected papal teachings, the universal Councils, etc. I’ll stick with the Bishop.
