Ahhh, my all-time favorite athlete is gone. Yogi Berra was 90.

From the NY Yankee statement, quoting his family:

“While we mourn the loss of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, we know he is at peace with Mom,” his family said in a statement released by the museum. “We celebrate his remarkable life, and are thankful he meant so much to so many. He will truly be missed.”

Even before the “greatest living Yankee” torch was passed to him with the death of Joe DiMaggio in 1999, Berra was always at the top of the list as the most respected and beloved Yankee deity because of his clutch hitting on the field and his humility and genial disposition off it. In Berra’s 18 seasons with the Yankees from 1946-63, they went to the World Series 14 times, winning 10 of them, making him baseball’s all time “Lord of the Rings”.

    Yogi’s wife once asked him, “Yogi, you are from St. Louis, we live in New Jersey, and you played ball in New York. If you die before I do, where would you like me to have you buried?”
    Berra replied: “I don’t know, just surprise me.”

  3. Of course, what Sweat meant to emphasize was that Yogi’s life in THIS world was over, not the NEXT. The NEXT one began for him yesterday, and will have no end.
