WSJ: “Assad Leaves Syria as Rebels Take Damascus”

September 27, 2025December 7, 2024 by Tom Faranda

Wow. Double wow. It appears that the now former President Bashar Al-Assad has gone to Russia.

The rebel group seems to be backed by Turkey. This from ABC.

The approaching fighters are led by the most powerful insurgent group in Syria, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, or HTS, along with an umbrella group of Turkish-backed Syrian militias called the Syrian National Army. Both have been entrenched in the northwest. They launched the shock offensive on Nov. 27 with gunmen capturing Aleppo, Syria’s largest city, and the central city of Hama, the fourth largest.

And this from the Wall Street Journal.

Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali said he was ready to cooperate with any leadership chosen by the people. The rebels also said they were entering the city of Deir Ezzour in eastern Syria. Hours earlier, rebel forces said they had seized the crucial city of Homs. The Syrian military appeared to collapse with stunning speed.

The rebels released hundreds of detainees from a prison dubbed the “human slaughterhouse” after seizing the facility on their march to the capital.
