How my birthday went

Excellent!

Besides doing such exciting things as buying a new lawn mower (no photo), we had a nice dinner together at home after spending part of the morning on the Croton Aqueduct trail. I had been musing over walking the Aqueduct for several weeks, and Brigid gave me a map of it for my birthday (anything to get me out of the house?).

We walked out and back on the first section – total around three miles. Even thought the trail runs right through Croton at it’s top end, I had never been on it. The trail starts at the Croton Dam and goes a total of 26.2 miles to the Yonker/Bronx border.

So this was a sort of scout-out. My hiking buddy Jeanne Marie and I have decided to walk the entire length, probably from south to north and probably in two 13 mile increments.

Here – a few pictures, and you shold be able to tell who took what.

Some explaining. “Ventilators. Aqueduct engineers laced cylindrical ventilating towers art roughly one mile intervaals to allow fresh air to ciruclate over the water. Most of these ‘curious little towers’ survive as prominent features on the trail.”

Not sure what this is, although I’m sure I should know. Brigid took this picture.

We had water with us but never took a drink because there were ripe wild raspberries everywhere on the trail.

The Dam from the southeast side – which I never walk over to when I’m on the Dam. This is basically where the trail begins.

Funny angle, form the same side. –

On the way out –

And back at the ranch. My ad hoc nutritionist Jeanne Marie will be appalled.
