At the “Eastern States Championship” – but all New York participants. A strong javelin field with four of the five best throwers in the state there, along with a number of others in the top 20.
Tim’s 4th throw of 156’1″ was a new PR (personal record) for him and got him a fourth place finish. He finished ahead of a number of boys who have better PR’s, but on the day, he out-threw them.
Tim was a little fortunate to have the additional three throws of the finals. On the initial three throws, only the top six were to go to another set of three throws (this is standard in any throws competition, whether javelin, discus, shot put, or hammer), and Tim was tied for sixth place at 151’2″. So they gave both boys the additional throws – seven finalists instead of six. It’s the best throw of the six that counts.
As always, Tim finished behind Jack O’Brien (#1 in the state) and Mike Gabrielsen (#3 in state), both of whom go to Hendrick Hudson HS, and both of whom are going to West Point. He missed third place by 4 inches – but close stuff like that is standard in throwing competitions.
Overall, Tim finished #15 in the state, BUT #3 in the class of 2015.
