Margaret Thatcher

UPDATE: Brigid is watching the BBC coverage.

A popular figure in Farandaville. I was living in Jamaica when she was first elected Prime Minister. I remember the consternation of my dedicated communist socialist Labor Party member friend Mick whose flat was next to mine.

Prime Minister David Cameron led tributes saying: “Today is a truly sad day for our country. We’ve lost a great prime minister, a great leader, a great Briton. As our first woman prime minister, Margaret Thatcher succeeded against all the odds, and the real thing about Margaret Thatcher is that she didn’t just lead our country, she saved our country, and I believe she’ll go down as the greatest British peacetime prime minister.”

  1. I had the privilege of meeting her many years when she did a series of lectures on the “rule of law” for a private bank–as it pertained to doing business in former Soviet countries. She was elegant but unpretentious, and the clerical staff all loved her.
