Terrible end to a kayaking trip

I'm posting this because I'd heard Friday evening that a small boy had been plucked out of the Long Island sound, and there was initially no understanding of how he got there.

"I saw somebody in the water, which is unusual that far out," Sandomenico told Newsday. "So I turned around, and it turns out to be a 5-year-old boy."

After his rescue, the child told the Coast Guard that he watched his dad "go down" into the 14-foot deep water.

The little boy couldn't provide any details on what went wrong as the pair headed out on their day trip along Long Island's north shore.

The kayak was later recovered about 500 yards from where the boy was discovered.
