For the first time in 61 years, Ireland win the rugby Grand Slam

Full Disclosure: Brigid was born in Cork

By defeating Wales in Cardiff, in a 17-15 nailbiter, Ireland went undefeated in the Six Nations tournament. They defeated France, Italy, England, Scotland, and then Wales. The last time they won the tournament was in 1985, when it was the Five Nations (no Italy).  And the last time they went undefeated, for a Grand Slam, was in 1948.

Wales lead 6-0 at halftime. Here are the second half highlights, with Ireland scoring the only two tries of the match, and then the teams exchanging drop goals (and the lead, since Wales had added two more penalty kicks) in the last five minutes.

Hopefully, the first video below will not get taken down for copyright violations. If so, the second video – the official one – will be up.

UPDATE: Ahhh, they took the first video down. Second one is up and there’s a bonus I’ve added – top ten tries of the Six Nations

Here’s the second one –

    Tom,
Thanks for the e-mail on this. I had DVR’d it and told all of my European colleagues to keep me on the dark on this. Then I cracked open my e-mail and right in the title I got the result. It would it have been a hell of a finish if I hadn’t known Stephen Jones was going to miss the drop-kick.
It was one thing when you ruined my Tuesday and Thursday nights, but this…
    Hope all is well
