Benedict is a veteran university professor and committed scholar, so his speech about education was eagerly anticipated. Some observers thought he would use the opportunity to chastise Catholic colleges for not being orthodox enough.
The pope did say that Catholic colleges must maintain academic freedom without appearing to endorse views that oppose Catholic teachings. But he did not imply that Catholic colleges are failing.
"Any appeal to the principle of academic freedom in order to justify positions that contradict the faith and the teaching of the Church would obstruct or even betray the university’s identity and mission," he said.
