Having survived rafting on the Lehigh River last weekend Tom Faranda’s Folly: Photos from the weekend, including rafting and a friend’s retirement party , Tim and I yesterday evening went to the Hudson Valley Renegades minor league baseball game (Just the two of us, Brigid and Joe passed on this one). We went along with most of Tim’s cub scout group, and hundreds of other cub and boy scouts, and some girl scouts.
It was Boy and Girl Scout night at Duchess Stadium, home of the Renegades.
Who are the Renegades? hvrenegades.com: Home They are an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and play in the NY-Penn League. The Rengades play single A minor league ball, and the previous night set a new one game attendance record, with 4,916 fans at that game. Like all minor league franchises, they do all sorts of ingenious promotions and entertainments to get people to the stadium, and they put on a good show. Oh, and the standard of baseball is pretty good, too.
Last night they played the Brooklyn Cyclones, but more importantly, Tim got to horse around with lots of his friends AND then sleep out for the night in the outfield.
The game result (of no great relevance to Tim – he’s really only intereseted when he’s playing) was a win for the home team, as they built a 7-1 lead on three home runs and a stand-up triple, and then coasted for a final score of 7-5.
Here are the pictures –
It was a full moon night.

Between the sixth and seventh innings, they encourage all the kids to do a konga line around the stadium – Tim is in a white t-shirt almost dead center in the picture.

One of the few times Tim sat still the whole night

After the game, all the scouts got organized and set up their tents in the outfield. Here is the one we had, a new backpacking tent rather then our standard four person car camping tent. The yellow fly was clipped to the four corners of the base of the tent, but only draped over the inner wall and the two poles, since they didn’t allow staking on the field.

Once things were settled down, there was an organized “simon says” competition, with the first prize a season ticket to the Renegades for 2008. Many, but not all, the scouts took part.

Another view of tent city, as things started to settle down around midnight.

This one nighter was a test of some of our stuff and it all turned out well. Despite a sudden moderately heavy rain for about three quarters of an hour shortly after midnight, we were completely dry inside, even without a ground cloth under the tent floor, and the draped fly. And our 3/4 length self-inflating sleeping pads worked fine. gave a comfortable enough night’s sleep, with no back pain for me in the morning.
Next day, everyone is up and out pretty quick, and Tim actually broke down the tent himself while I was carrying stuff to the car. Tim’s friend in the second picture is Kevin McCarroll

Tim is grumpy after getting only four hours sleep, and decided not to carry anything to the car. So I had him take my picture, as I was doing all the carrying. It’s about 7:15 in the morning.
