It was a tough past weekend, as Dad tried to help Joe with his eighth grade honors mathematics. Quadratic equations. Barrel of laughs.
Panic (or something near to it) was set off last Thursday with a call from Mrs. Kwan (Joe’s math teacher) informing me that Joe had managed a 24% on his test the day before, on simultaneous and quadratic equations. She called me on my cell phone at 9:30 in the morning, as I rooted around in the basement to find a bottle of champagne to give to a client celebrating a big birthday.
So we had a lousy several days workin’ on math and then I delivered Joe to math tutor extraordinaire Bev Milich today at 4 o’clock, for a last effort.
Bev felt Joe now knew it all and would “get a 100”. We’ll see. Test is tomorrow (Tuesday).
Then this evening we drove down to Fordham Prep to hear about the athletic programs offered at the Prep (very impressive – and they get to use the University facilities). Joe is interested in running cross country in the fall, and maybe joining the crew in the winter (in keeping with Faranda tradition, as a coxswain; the guy in the back of the racing shell who does all the talking and no rowing).
Will report on how Joe’s math results turn out.
Here Joe is about five weeks ago, out with me at a restaurant after we climbed Sugarloaf Mountain Tom Faranda’s Folly: Tom and Joe’s Sunday climb up Sugarloaf in the Hudson Highlands. He’s not too keen on having his picture taken these days!
