The Croton dam is far and away the most impressive feature of my town of Croton-on-Hudson. Built at the end of the 19th century, it is the second largest hand hewn masonry structure in the world. Go here for the history and to see what the dam usually looks like:

The rain Sunday and Monday resulted in a spectacular show of nature for anyone who thought to check out the dam, and the usually slow moving Croton river. Here are some pictures, taken Monday between 5 and 7 o’clock in the evening.
Here’s the whole dam Monday, with the spillway in the foreground

Compare this view of the spillway, with the view at the wikipedia link, above

Meanwhile, here’s the view from the top, looking west – that’s the Croton River, with the Croton Gorge Park to the left

Here’s the other side of the dam – the reservoir completely filled and overflow heading to the spillway –

Sarah Costa and Kathleen Gagnon were also on top of the dam. They’d scootered over when I left a voice mail at Kathleen’s house that the dam was worth a visit. The girls are looking damp!

And west down the river. The trees are usually not in the water!

Brigid took this picture of Tim and I –

as we approached the river to take a few shots. The water was really thundering. Had to be going 15 to 20 mph.

a few hundred yards further downstream, things were bad –

Here is my favorite picture of the day, and my business associate Judy Anderson also liked it. As did Brigid! So … a trifecta. Taken from the north side of the little bridge over the Croton river.
