If you are a fan of the Discovery Channel, you have already seen lots of interesting ads about their series beginning tomorrow, "Planet Earth."
Evidently it’s as good as the ads suggest. Here’s a review of the series, which start at 8 PM tomorrow with the first three hours.
Tom Shales – Wonders Never Cease On ‘Planet Earth’ – washingtonpost.com
"Planet Earth" sets a new standard in nature documentaries. The 11-part BBC series is full of astonishing sights — views of the Earth and its nonhuman creatures that outshine virtually anything seen on the screen before.
Years will pass before another program poses a serious challenge to this landmark.
And here’s another article from the Washington Post, on the rigors of making the series.
The Heights and Depths of Extreme Filmmaking – washingtonpost.com
An epic documentary comes with some epic inconveniences. Like living in a dark cave for days on end, trying not to lose your mind. Or taking two hours to get a glass of water, which will freeze if not immediately stored in a Thermos.
Or just being really, really cold and really, really stinky — personal hygiene hindered by teeth-chattering conditions — for a seriously long time.
