My friend Tom Hardy contacted me a few weeks ago. He and his wife Mabvuto were going to pass through New York – staying at the Newark airport Sheraton for one night – so I arranged to meet up with them for a couple of hours Friday evening.
Tom and his wife Judy were good friends of ours, going way back to my two years in Jamaica from 1977 to 1979. Tom was teaching in the same school I was teaching in (and played rugby with me in the Mandeville rugby club) , and Judy was a resident physician in the Mandeville public hospital. Judy was Brigid’s maid of honor when we got married (June 23, 1979) and Tom “gave the bride away.” We stayed in touch after that, with occasional visits.
Judy died tragically in 1998, and a few years ago Tom met Mabvuto (African Princess) on one of his frequent visits to Africa (the publishing company he works for does a great deal of work there – textbooks mostly). They got married about four years ago.
Anyway, I met up with them Friday, and we caught up on our sons (Tom also has two, in their early 20’s) and I attempted to explain to them the fine points of baseball.
Here are a couple of pictures:
