September 17th – Rally to "SAVE DARFUR NOW: Voices to Stop Genocide" in New York City
Since February of 2003, a genocide has been perpetuated in Darfur, Sudan, Africa by Arabic Muslims against black African Muslims. To date, about 450,000 people have been killed, countless girls and women have been raped, and 2 million people have been displaced from their homes (villages burned down). While the causes of the conflict are complex, the fact is that innocent people are benig killed solely because of their ethnicity, and the situation has unfortunately been growing worse despite recent international efforts.

Ever feel that you’d like to do more to voice your concern for innocent victims? Consider joining a group from Holy Name of Mary Parish.  This September 17th rally, much closer to home, will provide a similar opportunity to join in with other concerned citizens from over 170 faith-based and humanitarian groups to demand that the United Nations immediately deploy a peacekeeping force to Darfur. Most who have been studying this issue feel that is the best and most effective way to stop the senseless killing, rape and displacement of people.

The rally is at 2 to 5 P.M. on Sunday, September 17, in Central Park’s East Meadow (5th Ave. at 90th St. entrance).  If you’d like to join us in going to the rally, or find out more information about it, please call or email me, Maria Abonnel, at 914-737-6347 or maria@abonnel.com.
